It is generally said that if one has a mind, it does matter. But if you say that it doesn’t matter then it is said that you have misplaced your mind. How does it matter if one doesn’t mind? After all it is the mind over matter. This is weaving a conundrum of complexity and confusion. But the matter remains how can be the mind be over matter. Let’s try to simplify the complexity and clarify the confusion.
Mind-Matter dualism is a common metaphysical theory. Human beings are made of both the matter and the mind. Our body is of matter and mind is of spiritual substance. Dualism is closely associated with the philosophy of René Descartes, which holds that the mind is a nonphysical substance. Descartes clearly identified the mind with consciousness and self-awareness and distinguished this from the brain as the seat of intelligence. Hence, he was the first to formulate the mind–body problem in the form in which it exists today.
While we continue to think of mind and matter as two distinct aspects, but they are much more interlinked then we assume. Researchers world over has discovered enough evidence to prove that brain has the power to influence the body’s physiological structure. Whether it is Indian Yogi’s or Tibetan Monks, they have time and again proved that divine power of meditation and deep yoga have given them complete control of their body and mind. They abstain from food for days and still manage to maintain the physiological processes and parameters.
It is always said that the sports champion play their game in the mind. They beat the opponent first in their mind that it is what gets reflected in the reality. Proficiency in skill of the game or Efficiency in delivering the skill in the game can take so far not that further where you become the champion. To be the champion needs the perfect synchronization of mind and body. If mind is focused and determined, then even physical challenge and constrained gets eclipsed. But if the mind is in state of turbulence then best of effort fails to fetch the best result.
Pain or Pleasure is a state of mind. If we have developed inner peace then mind is in a state of happiness and if we have a physical injury then mind is in a state of agony. It is said that with the power of deep meditation we can train the mind to be in a state of neutrality in either pain or pleasure. Positive attitude can make a mind and negative attitude can break a mind.
